Apache Recognizes Lokitech CEO for Open Source Contributions

Bethesda, MD, January 23, 2003 -- Serge Knystautas, CEO, President and Founder of Lokitech, has been honored for years of service to the open source community by being elected the Chair of a Project Management Committee and made an Officer of the Apache Software Foundation (ASF). Knystautas was elected by his peers in the open source community, as are all officers, given that Apache is a self-managed organization.

Widely considered the most influential open source organization in the world, Apache has become a very powerful force in the software industry. ASF is not directly affiliated with or funded by any single business, and ranks second only to Sun in influence over Java standards (more than Microsoft, HP and IBM). Its web server has 62% marketshare, more than twice that of its closest competitor, Microsoft’s IIS, which holds only 27%.

The project that Knystautas was elected Chair of is the Java Apache Mail Enterprise Server, known as “Apache James.” Apache James is an SMTP and POP3 mail server looking to overtake sendmail and MS Exchange as the preferred enterprise mail server for organizational use. Knystautas was the original code contributor to this project and continues to maintain the site and related documentation, as well as contribute vision, bug fixes, optimizations, and occasional feature enhancements. Lokitech uses Apache James internally and for several client projects.

Knystautas has managed and contributed to multiple open source projects for over four years. In addition to these projects, he is responsible for the strategic direction and day-to-day operations of Lokitech, a services company that builds software using open source technology and educates the local business community about the benefits of open source technology.

"Given our current economic condition, it is more valuable than ever for businesses to understand the cost savings they can realize by adopting open source technology," Knystautas said. "I'm honored by this recognition and plan to use it to help further its adoption."
